Clare Whetton at Allestree Park Cross Country 2016 - BADGERS
Victoria Park in Leicester was the venue for the penultimate 5K race of the Winter Series and BADGERS sent a strong side out to try and recapture their stunning team win from the second race in the competition. Danny Warren led the race and outsmarted his nemesis Jason Barton in the closing stages to secure an individual victory in 18:04. Matt Tonks ran a gutsy race to finish in third in 18:29. Pete Wells made his debut in the series and his efforts enabled BADGERS to collect the men’s team prize by a slender margin over rivals Poplar RC. In the ladies race, the irrepressible Rachel Crump backed up her December win with yet another emphatic triumph in 22:23 ahead of club mate Anna Gibiino who finished second overall in 24:05. Rachael Bunting ran well to ensure the ladies scooped the team prize. Leesa Dennis won top V45 female, Anne Wells, top V55 female and with Karen Thompson, Clare Whetton and Jo Thompson all taking part, it made yet another successful outing for the club.

Carl Holyoak enjoyed success of his own at the weekend as by finishing first veteran and 12th overall in the Ram Run, he earned qualification to the UK and European Championships – a great effort from the popular 44 year old.

The fourth instalment of the Derby Runner Cross Country league took place at Allestree near Derby and newcomer Ryan Bennett showed his class as he penetrated the top ten on a treacherous course. Danny Warren finished in a creditable 23rd place with Dave Jackson courageously beating his demons to claim 49th place. Aaron Chetwynd bagged 68th spot with Adi Payne (88th) also making the top 100. Dave Craig was top veteran to finish, other runners included Saul Oxford, Alan Argyle, Dewi Powell, Eamon Thawley and Paul Grubb. In the ladies event, Esther McCullagh led the side home with a quality run to finish in 32nd place overall. Nivette Chester and Anna Gibiino (45th and 48th) ran excellent races as did Stephanie White (51st) and Cheryl Franklin (59th place). Nicki Bowman, Angela Stallings and Rachael Bunting all claimed top 80 finishes. Hannah Burgess came 123rd while Clare Whetton, Judy Parkes, Leesa Dennis and Vicky Cawley all took part.

At Conkers Parkrun, Dave Jackson ran his 93rd event finishing in second position overall in an incredible time of 17:57. Anna Gibiino turned out up at Sheffield Hallam parkrun managing a decent 23:23 while in-form Esther McCullagh was first lady finisher in the whole field over at Coventry parkrun in a cracking time of 22:25. Saul Oxford also ran. At Kingsbury Water Park, Matt Tonks continued his return to full fitness running a splendid 18:02 to finish second behind Cani-cross runner Chris Lockhart. Adi Payne finished 15th in 20:59 while David Craig ran an excellent 21:33. This was his 92nd run as he vies with his namesake Jackson to become the first BADGER called David to make a century of appearances. Robert Crow, Patrick Cleall, Alan Argyle and Rich Hill all took part as did Fay Casey and John Hanson. Jo Davies ran an impressive PB in 28:46. Bev Spencer, Paul Grubb and Liz Peel ran too. Angela Stallings raced her young son Grady round the 5k course and also making it a family affair was Evie Whitehead as she pipped her mum Kay on the line! Jason Husselbee-Orwin safely made it round while the popular Kerrie Dickens made a welcome return to action in BADGER colours.
