Bosworth Duathlon - BADGERS
After the success of last year’s inaugural BADGERS Atherstone 10k race, the 2015 event is scheduled for 30th August and while the organisation and preparations are well underway, more volunteers are still required to help marshal the race. Last year’s event was a great success – the race sold out well in advance and thousands raised for good causes including the fantastic Zoe’s Place charity. Hundreds of people came out to watch the race unfold before climaxing in front of St. Mary’s Church in the market square. The plan is for the race to become a community event for years to come so if anyone is able to spare an hour and a half on that Sunday morning, they should email publicity2badgersbaddesley@gmail.com . Full training and instruction will be given beforehand.

There was no racing hangover this weekend for Monika Lampart, still basking in the glory of her Dash of the Titans victory, she was back the road on Sunday competing in the Worcester Half Marathon but with more success as she took half a minute off her personal best to finish in a highly creditable 7th place and a time of 1:37:18.

In Brighton, husband and wife team Pete and Anne Wells ran the marathon, Anne clocking up a gold standard time of 4:13:27 and Pete, in his last-ever tilt at the distance knocked a full 30 minutes off his previous marathon best. Anna Gibiino travelled to Belvoir for the half marathon and finished in a very respectable 1:44:15.

On the Saturday, BADGERS were once again distributed around the country in parkrun events. In Southwick Park, Trowbridge, Rachael Bunting and Danny Warren ran, Danny finishing 2nd in an impressive 18:01 and going one better in Braunstone, Ian Mansell came home first in 17:29. At Conkers, Eamon Thawley continued his run of good form finishing just ahead of the returning Jason Husselbee-Orwin and on home turf at Kingsbury Water Park, David Craig was first Badger back with Paul Grubb, Alan Argyle, Pete Boardman (PB), Tracey Elsdon and the rapidly improving Leesa Dennis (PB) all putting in a good show.

In the Centurion Grand Prix 5 mile race, in form Ian Mansell came 6th in a cracking time of 28:55.

In nearby Market Bosworth, Atherstone-based Kurt Hatwell won the Bosworth Duathlon event, two 4 kilometre runs punctuated by a bike ride. Hatwell used to run for BADGERS before opting to concentrate on triathlons and all his friends from his old club were delighted to see him triumph. There were a few BADGERS trying out this type event however, David Craig finished in 1:25:31 with Stephanie White, Dewi Powell and Jason Husselbee-Orwin also putting in good performances on a fairly blustery day.

Finally, the club held a beer and skittles social event on Friday 10th April. Anna Gibiino’s team won the team prize but the real glory surely belonged to David Craig who on the very last throw of the night, responded to Jared Karim’s call of “show us how it’s done then David” by promptly becoming the first and only person to despatch all nine pins to the ground. Not only that, he did it in style, managing the mighty feat with just the one cheese rather than the customary three. What a player!
