Adidas Thunder Run 24h 2015 - BADGERS

All in 24

Catton Park near Alrewas was the location for many brave BADGERS this weekend as they took part in the Adidas Thunder-run 24 hour race whereby teams of up to 8 people take it in turns to run a challenging cross country 10 kilometre lap over a 24 hour period which often means running in the dead of night for many athletes. Two BADGERS team took part this year in the mixed 8’s category. Carl Holyoak led his side to a staggering 32 laps or 320kms which earned them a top ten finish. Chris Horton set the tone with a rapid first lap in slippery conditions, even leading the entire race for a period. He handed over to local running legend and 100 Marathon club member Matt Tonks who continued the brisk pace. As the course began to dry out, BADGERS Danny Warren and Aaron Chetwynd helped consolidate the team’s standing and with skipper Holyoak, veteran Adie Kirkham, debutante Rachel Crump and newcomer Adam Robinson all putting in great shifts, the team set a new BADGERS lap record for the event.

Tonks ran the fastest lap overall (40:10) despite sustaining a sickening hand injury in the days before the event but the highlight of the day for the team was undoubtedly Danny Warren winning the intermediate hill sprint over thousands of competitors which in turn earned the speedster and his grateful team-mates a brand new pair of Adidas trainers each! Meanwhile, BADGERS other outfit, dubbed Badger Me Senseless comprising of Karen Thompson, Kay Whitehead, Liz Peel, Serena Baker, Stuart Walton, Tim Baker, Rosie Harding and Esther McCullagh ran a fantastic 23 laps of the course which for the majority of the side was the first time they had attempted the event. Many other club and family members came along to support which made the event that bit more special despite the sleep deprivation and heavy rain later on the Sunday.

In other races, BADGERS featured at parkrun events on the Saturday, none further afield than Leesa Dennis in Blandford Forum in Dorset. Alan Argyle and Luke Miles went to Cheltenham parkrun ahead of their Cotswolds based 24 hour race in tandem with Lichfield RC, their team clocking up 261 kms in that event. Closer to home, Ashley Taylor clocked an excellent new PB in 21:53 at Kingsbury Water Park, which also featured Simon Butlin, Maggi Savin-Baden, Lynne Davies, Adie Kirkham, Pete Wells and Gemma Hall. Jason Husselbee-Orwin ran at Conkers while Paul Grubb and Will Cartwright both put in a show over at Brueton Park, Solihull.

Tim Baker travelled up from Barnstaple midweek to join Danny Warren in the Notts 5 and ran an excellent 37:49. Warren meanwhile finished 22nd in the race running a new personal best of 29:37 in a highly competitive field. And finally, the determined Rachael Bunting travelled all the way to deepest Lincolnshire to run the Heckington 10 mile race and emerged with a personal best of 85:24, narrowly missing out on her target time but delighted with her performance nonetheless.
