BADGERS Clean Up At The Leicester Summer Series

On the weekend when the BADGERS club celebrated their fourth birthday, celebrations were plentiful in the fourth and final instalment of the popular Summer Series 5K races in Leicester. BADGERS sent out strong men’s and women’s team and returned home with prizes galore after a bumper night at the wet Victoria Park venue. Speedster Danny Warren continued his fantastic season by finishing 3rd in the race overall in a great time of 17:39. Club mate Matt Tonks followed in 18:07 to finish 4th as well as scooping the prize for the first veteran male to finish while Aaron Chetwynd returned to his best form clocking a personal best of 19:20 in 9th place. Adi Payne ran another sub 20 while Monika Lampart finished fourth female, recording a PB in 21:25 with Phil Crump running a fabulous 21:32 to set a new V40 female club record. Dave Earp, Ashley Taylor and Rachael Bunting all ran well as did popular club Chairperson Karen Thompson who showed her class with an age- category win of her own. The ladies team of Thompson, Bunting and Crump triumphed in the team event earning yet more silverware for the North Warwickshire based side. Not wishing to be outdone, the men’s triumvirate of Warren, Chetwynd and Payne also claimed the spoils in the men’s team event. Being the final race of the season, awards were handed out to the top performers over the course of the series. Danny Warren finished joint second in the men’s league with girlfriend Rachael Bunting grabbing a prize for 5th in the ladies version.

At Kingsbury Water parkrun, Warren’s rich vein of form continued apace, winning a thrilling sprint finish to be first Badger and first runner overall back in a tremendous time of 17:14. Ashley Taylor celebrated his birthday by matching his PB, Neil Gourlay mad a welcome return to action alongside Will Cartwright, Mark Williams (23:27-PB), John Hanson in his 127th event, Anne Wells, Paul Grubb, Pete Wells, Tracy Elsdon, Mandy Hanson and Carolyn Hall.

Jo James represented the club up at Conkers Parkrun, while Eamon Thawley and Jason Husselbee-Orwin holidaying separately in North Norfolk, bumped into one another at Sheringham Parkrun, with Thawley finishing a minute in front of his team mate on the hilly coastal run.

Glory-hunters Dave Jackson and Chris Horton made the long trip up to Lancaster to run in the city’s half marathon event. On a warm day in a beautiful setting, Jackson ran superbly to finish fifth overall in a fine time of 1:22:38 while Horton took more than six minutes off his own V40 club record for the distance coming in 11th place in a time of 1:26:05.

BADGERS got together on Saturday night to enjoy their birthday celebrations at their outdoor party. Entertainment was prevalent in the form of party games, tightrope walking, music and barbeque – several members enjoyed the odd beer or two and camped out overnight as the club looks forward to the next league race, the Hermitage 10K on Sunday followed by their home race, the greatly anticipated BADGERS Atherstone 10k.
