BA10k 2016 - BADGERS
Over 500 runners took advantage of the glorious bank holiday weekend weather as they took to the streets and drives of the Merevale Estate for the third running of the Badgers Atherstone 10K race. Renowned as one of the toughest road 10K races going, the event seems to go from strength to strength as bumper crowds enjoyed the sunshine in Atherstone after two years of overcast conditions. Spectators were treated to an athletics master class as 19 year old local lad Ellis Cross, now running for Aldershot, Farnham & District near to where he is studying set a blistering new course record of 34:25. Mum Dawn runs for the Badgers club and she was in attendance as her son simply blew the opposition away. Last year’s runner up Che Compton from Kent was once again the bridesmaid, however he did exact revenge for last year by pipping the 2015 winner, Jason Barton from Stilton Striders into third place.

Ryan Bennett from Badgers was fourth in 37:18 and along with Dave Jackson (6th) and Matt Tonks (9th) ensured the host club scooped the team prize by having three runners place in the top ten. Danny Warren and Chris Baxter placed 11th and 12th while just 13 runners broke the 40 minute barrier, giving an indication as to how hard a race this is. In the ladies event, defending champion Eleanor Fowler, 37, from Nuneaton retained her title with a fine run of 40:13, a minute ahead of her nearest rival, Julie Warner in second. Rebecca Mayles picked up third place.
Aaron Chetwynd, Glyn Broadhurst, Chris Horton and Martyn Barrett all enjoyed top 50 placings for the Badgers who once again put on a fantastic event from start to finish. Those not running could be found assisting on the day and marshalling with many each doing their own little bit to help Race Director Nivette Mullan and her husband Richard put on another spectacular show.

Keir Hardy, David Craig, Colin Lees and Dave Earp all ran well and Rob Boland helped Esther McCullagh round to collect a well deserved V40 ladies prize after a determined run from the glamorous hair-stylist. Popular Alan Argyle ran in a full Badger suit to the delight of the many youngsters watching on.

Other runners included Neil Gourlay, Dave W Jarvis, Rob Crow and veteran John Hanson while Steph White, Cheryl Dewis and Hannah Burgess performed admirably for the Badgers ladies. Eamon Thawley, Jo Davies, John Savin-Baden, Pat Cleall and Paul Grubb gave good accounts of themselves while recently engaged Chelsea Wilson pipped her fiancé Luke Miles to 280th place by just one second! Liz Peel, Charlotte Oliver, Clare Whetton and John Dulson all got round safely in the late morning heat while Jo Hardy, Rebecca Kinson and Michael Morton all did well.

As if that wasn’t enough Badgers to write home about, Maggi Savin-Baden, Leanne Baker, Karen Missen, Dave Bailey, Pete Boardman, Debbie Wilson, Rachel Hudspith, Pete Wells and Sarah-Jane Fletcher all proudly flew the Badger flag. One-time beginner Badgers Rosie Harding, Rachael Howard, Emily Karim, Sue Wilson, Vicky Howard and Mandy Hanson all conquered the challenging course, a real testament to their determination and character over recent times.
