latest graduates and run-leaders from the successful 0 to 5K Beginner BADGER Programme
BADGERS University professor Liz Peel recorded her 12th marathon of 2016 as she continues her quest for a century and was rewarded with a season’s best time of 4:27:45 at the ‘Day at the Movies’ Marathon in Walton-on Thames, Surrey at the weekend. Accompanied every step of the way by steadfast cohort and fellow BADGER, Karen Thompson herself running her 24th marathon, Peel showed real zeal as she came home in 21st place in the 26.2 mile event.

One runner ran midweek and it was Chris Baxter who had another tilt at the RWD Derby Midweek 5K. Finishing 9th in a high quality field, the 26 year old clocked a superb new personal best of 17:00, a fitting reward for his recent hard work. A clutch of runners headed for Beacon Hill on Sunday to tackle the challenging annual half marathon there, run entirely off road and across some undulating terrain. Chris Upton, somehow fresh from his 51 minute Mo Runner 10K race in Birmingham the day before led the troops home in a fine 1:44:49. Ashley Taylor 2:07:02 ran his heart out while Steph White got round in 2:08:37, just in time to see her partner Mike Taylor cross the line in what was his 100th half marathon, a superb achievement for the popular West Bromwich Albion fan. Stuart Walton battled hard but struggled to mask his disappointment as his time of 2:24:58 was below his usual lofty standards.

Four BADGERS travelled to Coventry for the 10K race in the Memorial Park. New-boy Andy Smith was first back in 54:03, ten minutes ahead of wife Jo. Ann-Marie Currier (63:23) and Clare Hutton (66:33) both did well as they too are new recruits to the club.
There was a bumper turnout at parkrun at the weekend with the latest group of Beginner BADGERS completing their journey from the settee to a 5K run. Supported by a number of club run-leaders and friendly members, the graduates “enjoyed” a cold and wet morning in making their mark but picked up well deserved praise along with their certificates post-run. They included Kirsty Harvey, Helen Farmer, Rachel Taylor, Dylan Miller, Millie Prestwood, Vickie Gilks, Jacob Brotherhood, Fiona Wright, Izzie Bradford, Kerry Bevan, Sarah Asbury, Amanda Gleeson, Katrina Bhowruth, Sarah Price and Dawn Sales.

Upfront, it was another BADGER-fest as Danny Warren this time led everyone home in first place recording a tremendous time of 17:10 in less than perfect wet and slippery conditions. Chris Baxter was unable to repeat his fireworks from midweek but still ran well six seconds behind in second. The consistent Chris Horton (17:33) took fourth with Dave Jackson desperately hanging on in fifth and recovering marathon man Matt Tonks also not far off in sixth, meaning only an assisted runner prevented the club from bagging the top five places! It was a brave run from both and in Jackson’s case, perhaps a little too brave.

Veteran Ian Smith ran 20:07 while David Craig and Ian Robinson both did well. Dave Jarvis dug deep to finish ahead of ex-football star Leon Millership. Nicki Bowman capped a memorable weekend as she romped home in 24:47, first lady BADGER and fourth female in the field ahead of the popular Serena Baker (5th) who appears to be regaining her former speed. New signing Lorna Jackson also made the top ten with a brave time of 25:36. Adie Kirkham, John Dulson, David Bailey, Amy Stredder, John Hanson ran well while Karen Draper helped herself to a new personal best. Other runners included Claire Bradford, Mark Williams, newcomer Carlos Cloaca, Eamon Thawley, Anne-Marie Matthews, Sharon Whitehead and Michelle Carter. Pete Wells provided great support for the debutants alongside Clare Whetton and Colin Lees. Teresa Buck also went. Ted Franklin ticked off another run as the club’s oldest runner while record breaker Alan Argyle ran with fellow helpers Fay Casey and Jared Karim and finally Fay Cher who thankfully got round safely in her first effort.
