THREE RECORDS FALL AHEAD OF THE NEW LEAGUE SEASON

Damo Taylor - BADGERS
With the 2017 league season less than a week away, there was limited action at the weekend outside of parkrun but incredibly, three club records tumbled as the quality of action continues to get better and better.

At Gloucester, Matt Tonks proved once again that class is permanent as the 42 year old finished in 6th place in the marathon with a marvellous time of 2:56:03. One of just six runners on the day to break three hours, the popular Atherstone fire-fighter lowered his own club record at the distance with a stupendous run. In the 50K event, Hurley based endurance athlete Damo Taylor went better still as he set a new best over that distance of 3:28:50 which was enough to earn the hard-working 26 year old father of one a spot on the podium in third position. Completing 50k is a feat in itself but to accomplish it in a time that most would consider very respectable for a marathon (some 5 miles shorter) is truly special.

At Alsager in Cheshire, the speedy Chris Baxter attempted his first ever 5 mile race and came away with a Senior men’s club record. In a high quality field, his time of 28:49 was a superb effort, some 27 seconds inside the previous mark set jointly by Dave Jackson and Chris Horton. Not at all bad for a first go!

At Victoria Park in Leicester on Wednesday evening, BADGERS men’s team had their high hopes of another team win dashed as Hermitage Harriers rolled out a crack squad to thwart the plucky north Warwickshire lads. Chris Horton agonisingly missed out on a podium place by just one second as he finished fourth in 17:41. Rising star Aaron Chetwynd secured his best ever finish in 18:33 with the returning club stalwart Danny Warren making a gutsy 6th in 18:40. Rob Boland ran a tremendous new best of 20:47 in 18th spot while the battle weary Sarah Jane Fletcher gave everything she had after a tough weekend at Tough Guy to cross in 30 minutes.

Mike Taylor completed the Watford half marathon in 1:51 while at the Extreme Challenge OCR event, Carl Holyoak made light work of the difficult course to emerge 9th overall as well as third in his age group in a time of 61 minutes. Fellow BADGER Mark Williams finished a very respectable 44th in 74 minutes.

The 2017 Leicestershire road league starts on Sunday in the hilly Kibworth six mile race. BADGERS have a record number of entries in this challenging event which sold out in just days as the club continues to grow its membership base into the new year.

Karen Missen did the Mad Dash 10k at Moreton Morrell in 1.05.45 and with Becce Clarke finishing three seconds ahead in 1.05.42. Sharon Whitehead ran at Folkestone parkrun for the first time too.
