PERSONAL BESTS APLENTY AT FAST FRADLEY 10K

The Fradley 10K race on Sunday saw a bumper Badgers turnout with no fewer than 26 members taking on the famously fast flat Staffordshire course and there was no shortage of runners achieving new personal bests on the day despite some blustery wind. It was top female star Cheryl Dewis who placed highest, 11th lady in the field with a PB time of 45:53 earning her second place in her age category. The athletic Rachael Shelton also went well in 47:10, a tidy new personal best for her in 16th place and potentially one to watch for the upcoming LRRL road races. Veteran endurance ace Ron Mahoney was first male back for the club in a superb 38:23 with team mate Sam Starkey speeding through soon afterwards in a quality 38:42 (PB). Marathon man Matt Tonks continued his comeback in steady fashion crossing the line in 39:41 while former semi-professional footballer and occasional cricketer Jimmy Dewis was next back in a rapid 41:53 (PB), carrying on his good form from the end of 2018. Tim Gould ran well for his 43:41 and fellow veteran Rob Crow was delighted to get home in 47:31, a new personal best for the likeable Atherstone man. Wayne Repton ran a respectable 47:33 (PB) and Chris Upton 47:52 before Paul “PB” Bruce showed just how far his running has come by crossing the line in 52:26 (PB).

There were PB’s for a number of the Badgers ladies too. Lil Souter was in top form running 53:43 and long-serving Jo Hardy worked industriously to lower her PB down to 53:49. Kerry Clover ran 53:51 with Jo Davies performing well once again in 55:21. The popular Ann-Marie Currier stormed home to a huge new personal best in 55:34 as her recent hard efforsts begin to bear tasty fruit. Club kit supremo and veteran runner Dave Bailey ran an impressive 55:46 at aged 60, again a PB, while and Richard Hill ran 54:21 and Yvonne Faulkner 57:40. Amanda Gould got round in 58:54 and Nicola Stanley continued her dramatic improvement with yet another best, this time in 59:19. There were steady performances from Debbie Wilson (70:25), Pauline Morris (65:00), Eileen McElhone (77:51) and Terry Argyle. Other runners included Amy Stredder, Aaron Chetwynd and Gavin Crockwell.

Five Badgers took on the 20 mile off road Grizzly run event down in East Devon, with Dave Jenkinson leading the quintet home in 3:26. Stefan Martin followed through soon after in 3:40 with Paul Grubb (4:33), Alan Argyle and Stuart Walton all doing well. Justin Haywood featured in the high-profile Vitality London half marathon, clocking a respectable 98:35 behind Sir Mo Farah who has yet to return his Badgers membership forms for the new season.

Parkrun saw a plethora of Bagers hammering the courses around the land. Chris Baxter made an appearance at Leicester Victoria and emerged with a classy first place in 16:51. Men’s captain Adi Payne bossed the show at Bedworth proving that he is adept at winning both at home and abroad as he backed up his USA win in 2018 with a first-place finish at the Miners Welfare Park in 18:29. Team mate Glyn Broadhurst was a gallant second place in 19:10 while brave Dave Jackson narrowly missed out on making it a club 1-2-3 with his gutsy 4th place in 20:08. Carl Holyoak rolled back the years in 21:47 and the wind-assisted Nicki Bowman came with a very late run to take 6th female on the day in 24:51.

At Kingsbury Water Park, Dave McGowan was in great form as he romped to a career best second place with his time of 17:29 (PB). Danny Warren made 4th in 18:25 while a resurgent Matt Tonks made a welcome return to the top ten in 19:02. Matt Green’s quest for a sub-20 time must wait another week as the long striding Southend fan battled hard in 20:22. Monika Lampart was first back for the ladies in 23:02 and 5th overall while Lee Millership, Colin Lees, Peter Coogan, John Restall, Shaun Coyle, Terry Argyle and Fiona Meldrum all dug deep. Other runners included Yvonne Feasey, Pete Boardman, Nicola Stanley, Dave Bailey, Paul Wallace, Mille Prestwood, Evie Whitehead, Paulina Cartwright, Anne Devenney, Vikki Smith, Andrea Moss and Sue Green. Holly Matts, Andy Smith, Sam Starkey, Lil Souter, Matt Jackson and Rachael Shelton all got round in one piece.

At Long Eaton, Aaron Chetwynd was battling the breeze emerging home in 7th place in a very brisk 16:59. Simon Currier was the subject of some big money bids during the transfer window but his loyalty to Bagers paid dividends as he swept to a hard-fought PB of 23:56. Ladies supremo Sarah-Jane Chetwynd is setting higher and higher standards for herself right now as she propelled herself to a new 5K best of 25:27. Elsewhere, the venerable Eamon Thawley ran 24:53 at Coventry ahead of Yvonne Faulkner and the experienced Alan Argyle. Wayne Repton ran a speedy 23:47 at Walsall Arboretum while Chris Upton was the sole club representative at his local Rosliston parkrun.

John Hanson was tearing it up at Braunstone, clocking a rapid 21:58 ahead of wife Mandy. Cameron Barnes ran 21:24 with Sam Klucis coming home in 29:45. Finally at Watermeadows parkrun near Towcester, Richard Hill, Jared Karim and Jenna Davies all turned out for the fourth running of the fledgling event.
